Winter 2006 Issue No 19

Better Climate For Camden

Camden’s Better Climate programme: Bloomsbury Business to Benefit

On 12 October 2006, Better Climate for Camden was launched with an overflowing crowd at the Law Society in Chancery Lane. The Mayor of Camden, Cllr Jill Fraser, headed the list of dignitaries. The programme has its own website: www.betterclimate.org

With impressive timing, Better Climate for Camden anticipated by several weeks the publication of the internationally influential Stern Review on the Economics of Climate Change. Sir Nicholas Stern warned of global financial collapse if the climate change issue is not tackled now.

Funded by the London Development Agency, Better Climate for Camden is a partnership between the London Borough of Camden, The Holborn Partnership, the University of East Anglia (UEA) and Envirowise. The LDA grant totals £255,000 and enables businesses in Camden to receive free bespoke support to reduce their impact on climate change.

The UEA is the home of CRed-UK, an innovative on-line carbon reduction tool that allows businesses to calculate the carbon savings they will make from changes to their activities.  Businesses in Camden can access CRed through the www.betterclimate.org website.

According to Kirsteen Harrison of Camden Council, the partnership aims to reduce the carbon footprint and increase the efficiency of businesses in Camden – without charge to the business.

Over the lifetime of the project the partnership will:
  • Produce best practice templates

  • Secure measures to cut carbon emissions and use software to demonstrate carbon savings
  • Provide a tailored and bespoke package of support including on-site support, events and an award scheme
  • Act as a conduit for disseminating practical environmental advice for the Borough’s businesses.
Cllrs Penny Abraham and Rebecca Hossack, ward councillors for Bloomsbury, are supporting the project by running the “Lights Out in Bloomsbury” campaign, asking businesses in Bloomsbury to switch their lights off at night.  Cllr Abraham said : “We are delighted to be supporting Better Climate for Camden which has been set up to assist in reducing your business costs, in finding new business opportunities and in benefiting the environment.”

Cllr Hossack added: “Whether your interest is in the environment, cutting bottom line costs, or meeting decision makers from other organisations based in Camden, make sure that you don’t miss out!”
