Welcome from The Duke of Bedford

The Bedford Estates’ land holdings in Bloomsbury have been owned by the Russell Family since 1669. From being agricultural fields at that time, successive Dukes of Bedford have played their part in creating the Bloomsbury we see today. Much of the area was developed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries; the splendid and elegant Georgian buildings and garden squares which are so characteristic of Bloomsbury, are the enduring legacy of my ancestors.  We are committed to preserving and enhancing this precious heritage for present and future generations of residents, workers and visitors to enjoy.

Stewardship

As a long-term landowner, we care deeply about Bloomsbury and are dedicated to protecting the heritage of this historic London quarter.

While preserving the past is important to us, so is the future. Our modern approach to stewardship aims to bring a sense of vibrancy to the community, while making a positive contribution towards a sustainable environment.

Conservation

In today’s fast-paced world, protecting an area’s historical value becomes even more important.

We work hard to preserve Bloomsbury’s special qualities, so they can be shared with future generations.

When it comes to the heritage buildings in our care, our conservation work involves the restoration of original features.

We combine this with contemporary design so our properties remain attractive, contemporary, comfortable places to live and work in.

Sustainability

Our 21st century ambition is to help this beautiful area meet the challenges of an environment under pressure, both now and in the future. This long-term approach means we are always considering the impact of our actions on future generations.

From ensuring historical buildings are as efficient as possible to introducing the latest sustainable technology, we constantly strive to reduce our energy consumption.

We also play an active role in the protection and development of Bloomsbury's biodiversity and keep two hives in our Montague Street Gardens where our bees produce delicious award winning honey.

Community

It is not just the elegant Georgian buildings, pretty garden squares and world-class cultural institutions that make Bloomsbury so magical, it is also the people that call Bloomsbury their home.

A strong community spirit combined with a packed calendar of social events gives Bloomsbury a village-like feel that is unique in central London. And it is something we are keen to protect.

From supporting the Bloomsbury and Bedford Square Festivals to working with local volunteer groups and charities, we are always seeking new ways to bring people together.
