Welcome from the Duke of Bedford
The Bedford Estates’ land holdings in Bloomsbury have been owned by the Russell Family since 1669. From being agricultural fields at that time, successive Dukes of Bedford have played their parts in creating the Bloomsbury we see today. Much of the area was developed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries; the splendid and elegant Georgian buildings and garden squares which are so characteristic of Bloomsbury, are the enduring legacy of my ancestors.
We are committed to preserving and enhancing this precious heritage, not only for my family, but also - and importantly - for present and future generations of residents, workers and visitors to enjoy.
There is an immense resource of world class cultural, literary, educational and medical institutions located here in Bloomsbury, right at the heart of Central London. These institutions are global leaders in their many and varied fields and Bloomsbury is rightly renowned for being at the cutting edge of scientific, cultural and social diversity in an ever changing world.
The Estate is a key player in the Bloomsbury community and in the wider context of London as a leading world city. We provide high quality accommodation for residential, commercial, educational, medical, retail and hotel occupiers. The garden squares, tree-lined streets and architecturally renowned listed buildings created by previous generations help to make Bloomsbury the Central London location of choice for so many. Together with the London Borough of Camden and other key stakeholders, we work to improve and enhance the public realm.
If you already know Bloomsbury, you will understand its attractions. If you haven’t yet discovered Bloomsbury, I welcome you to find out more about the area, and the Estate, through the pages of this website.
